Travel is often said to open our minds. But in 2026, while travelling along the Mekong River in Laos, one journey changed the way Yule Travel's founder viewed the entire travel industry.

After years of building Yule Travel from scratch in Bishopton, Renfrewshire, Ryan had seen first-hand the challenges facing independent travel specialists. But what he discovered in Southeast Asia revealed a much deeper problem: the communities welcoming visitors were not always benefiting from the tourism they helped sustain.

This realisation led to a complete rebuild of the business. Yule Travel evolved into a purpose-led travel company built around a simple belief: travel should create opportunities for the people who make it possible.

The Mekong Realisation

During a river cruise from Houayxay to Luang Prabang in Laos, Ryan encountered villages where schools appeared underused and local children worked in restaurants serving tourists. In the cities, markets were dominated by imported goods rather than locally made crafts.

Conversations with residents and visits to underrepresented villages highlighted the need for greater access to education, digital skills and economic opportunities. The same questions followed him into Vietnam and Thailand, where the performative side of "sustainable" travel, such as children being brought out to dance for wealthy tourists without any cultural context, became hard to ignore.

These experiences raised a fundamental question: when travellers spend money exploring the world, how much of that value actually reaches the people who live there?

He returned to Scotland convinced that selling holidays alone was not enough. The system needed a different blueprint.
